Has Apple gone too far?
On December 29 2017, Apple openly admitted to slowing down older generation apple products purposely through a series of IOS updates. Apple, the company that manufactures phones, computers, laptops, watches, televisions to millions of consumers worldwide. This is the same company whose logo you literally see at every corner. These "slowdowns" have angered consumers, but at the same time have have led many to lose respect and trust in the company. Aside from the backlash they are getting from consumers, Apple is also facing turmoil from their investors because of they way they mislead and manipulated the “performance of older phones.” Theories are beginning to surface on how Apple has use this as a way to sabotage older generation products to behave slowly and cause consumers to consider upgrading and lead to Apple having more money in their pockets.
This situation has become so serious that Tom Schoenberg and Matt Robinson of the Los Angeles Times report hat The Justice Department and The Securities and Exchange Commision have conducted an ongoing investigation on Apple. They are looking at whether or not they have “violated securities laws concerning its disclosures about a software update slowing older apple models.” As of today, they are still in the early stages and since a month has passed there has not been any breaking news regarding Apple.
In North America, Apple has become one of the most recognized and popular brands out of the market. I would consider one of their life's most exciting moments was to be able to finally owning an Ipod touch and being able to fit in with everybody else back in 2011. There was something with the product that made you feel like you are holding one of technology most revolutionary product. Apple can word up their reasoning to why these products are being slowed down any way they want but everyone knows exactly what they are doing. In the end of the day they just care about money, not suprising at all. The people who are being affected are the ones who aren't finacially stable to keep upgrading every 2-3 years for a phone. It took me 3 years to save up for an Ipod touch and even by then I was able to afford the model that has already been outdated 3 times. It is wrong in all ways to purposely slow down these iphones and other apple products. The argument can be made that these individuals aren’t entitled to owning an apple product, they are not the only brands on the market. I'm sorry to say that's true but in America, Apple is the most popular technological product out there. Everyone wants to own an Apple product. For example, as I’m literally typing up this blog at the J. Paul Leonard Library in SFSU. Almost everyone who has a laptop out has an Apple laptop.
As a customer for Apple, I can say I am disappointed and really lost a bit of trust with them. Considering I am one of the millions who are willing to spend the amount to be able to hold the latest Apple product. I'm beginning if I should be continuing to support this company. Almost all corporation greedy money hungry giants and Apple just showed that they are along with that. The last 2-3 we have seen Instances in where they put their prices for their products at high wages that make it not anyone can own. The latest example of this is the release of Iphone X. It's price upon its' release and still remains is $1,000. I can say that not everything I own is from Apple because I know how expensive they can be. I do know many people who heavily invest in Apple products. I am sure you know some people who are as well. Do you still have trust in Apple? Does their latest actions show their true faces? Should we continue them despite this kind of controversy?
