Playstation Exclusives are in trouble?
It has been 5 years since Sony has released, their latest console, the Playstation 4 back in November 2013. The Xbox One was released around the same time period. Microsoft and Sony have been competing of who has the more superior console since 2000. The matchups so far have been PS2 vs. Xbox, PS3 vs. Xbox 360, PS4 vs Xbox One. There certainly some bias involved in determining which one is the better of two. The good thing behind this competition is that it makes both companies try and put their best foot forward. We the consumers are then being presented the best graphics, playability, games, and overall entertainment from each respective console. A system’s exclusives is what I believe helps determine which system is the better of the two. For this blog I will be talking about Sony since they are always stepping up from their previous installments and always aim to make their system more accessible to anyone.
Back in the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 days, Sony never had well-established network in where playing with other users through multiplayers was the main part of their systems. Instead they focused on the single player aspect and worked to helping give their users the experience possible. This is where they were able to build franchises that are exclusive only to playstation users. We were welcomed with iconic characters like part Crash Bandicoot, Parappa The Rapper, Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, and Ratchet and Clanks. For me all these characters consisted of all my childhood. I lived through these games and cherish them the say way my father does with Super Mario back in his generation.
I believe it is safe to say that ever since the final days of the PlayStation 3, Sony has not been able to deliver a new content in where it gets the interest of players of all ages. To be honest Sony’s last greatest exclusives were BloodBorne and Horizon Zero Dawn. Most of their good games are just new instalments of their already set franchises. Franchises like the Uncharted series, Killzone, Infamous, Shadow of Colossus, Ratchet and Clank. This has to raise some serious concerns in regards to their creative department. According to Colin Campbell of The Polygon, now that we are out of the holiday Aside from the exclusives they are able to provide through y season. We have now a clear visual of the sales have been and Sony has seen a ;little drop off from years prior. The interesting part is that it only sold 50 million copies compared to the high 60 millions it usually sales in year pasts. PlayStation Network has been strong force since its creation in 2006. Sony has been always aiming to create a social hub in where friends and anyone across the world can interact within another. PSN has been a strong force with its collaboration with other cross media platforms like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Spotify, etc. As for their exclusive gaming content. Recently, None of their new content has been able to please both reviewers or game. These failures consist of games like Resogun, Knack, The Order:1886, Driveclub, No Man's Sky.
I believe it is important to be able to continue to produce new content through exclusivity through these video games franchises. These characters and games they introduce will help dictate if the game itself will be successful. Look at Disney for example, look at all the beloved characters they have created and still are doing so. It is fine to continue releasing games with characters we are used to seeing every now and then. I think it’ll hurt them in the long run if they continue releasing games featuring iconic franchises that they created along with expectations behind them. The chance of failure is significant and the chance of ruining these already good franchises reputation would be fatal. Are you ok with seeing Sony releasing content with familiar faces? What should we do? Are we the consumers being too picky?
